Queen of Memphis and the Stories Behind the Author: A Conversation with Martin Hegwood

February 7, 2025

Members of the Canton-Madison County Historical Society had the privilege of hearing from Martin Hegwood, an accomplished writer and author. Hegwood, known for his captivating storytelling and literary accomplishments, graciously shared his personal experiences with our group, offering insight into his career and creative process.

A highlight of the event was Hegwood's recounting of his time at the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) Law School, where he was a classmate of the renowned author John Grisham. The connection between the two writers sparked fascinating conversations about the craft of writing, the world of legal drama, and the creative influences that shaped their work.

Hegwood’s reflections provided a unique window into the experiences of those who studied law alongside one of the most well-known legal fiction authors of our time.

Hegwood also introduced attendees to his latest literary work, Queen of Memphis, a novel described as a soap opera set in 1999. He provided an engaging overview of the book, detailing its themes, characters, and the richly woven narrative that promises to captivate readers. Queen of Memphis is now available for purchase on Amazon, offering readers the chance to dive into the world that Hegwood has brought to life.

The Canton-Madison County Historical Society extends its sincere thanks to Martin Hegwood for his time, insight, and generosity he showed in sharing his journey with us. His talk not only inspired those in attendance but also reinforced the importance of storytelling in preserving our history and culture.

As we continue to fulfill our mission to preserve the history of Madison County, the Historical Society remains committed to providing opportunities for our community to connect with writers, authors, and local historians like Hegwood. His visit is just one of the many ways we aim to engage the public, enhance our historical programming, and celebrate the cultural richness of our area.
